Finger-Friendly Friends

Finger-Friendly Friends

Are you tired of the built-in archaic contact manager in your Windows Mobile? Tired of pulling out your stylus for searching contacts?

Goodbye Contacts. Hello Friends.

MANUAL

In this manual, you will find a number of screenshots describing the FFF features. To visualize your finger interaction, this hand will be shown on the screenshots:

Note that this hand is not actually displayed on your device!

Installing FFF

Download and the Finger-Friendly Friends file as described on the download page. You can either download it directly to your cell phone as a CAB file or install it from your PC using ActiveSync.

To start FFF, open it from the start menu. You can also define it as your default contact manager.

Looking up friends

As you start FFF, you will see a list of all your friends. In theory, you can scroll this list until you find your friend. However, this is no better than using an old-fashioned phone book anno 1982!

The FFF way to do it is to use the Doesn't Really Matter Where You Touch keyboard! Type the first letters of the name on the DRMWY-Touch keyboard. As you type, FFF will display the friends that are matching what you are typing.

Note that you don't have to touch exactly on the letters. FFF will use all the letters in the touch-zone of your finger indicated by the square to search for your friends. You can even use the DRMWY-Touch keyboard with gloves or after a beer or two!

If you mistype a character, you can easily backspace by dragging your finger from right to left across the DRMWY-Touch keyboard. A red arrow will indicate that you're about to perform a backspace. You can start all over by tapping the "Clear" softkey.

You can scroll through the list by dragging or touching the scrollbar on the left side of the result view. Note that the sensitive area of the scrollbar is much thicker than it appears. A fat thumb can hit the scrollbar without problems!

Selecting a contact

When you see your friend in the list, simply touch the name with your finger to select it. If you hit the wrong contact, don't worry. The contact isn't actually selected before you release your finger. You can touch the screen and move it up and down the list until you release it. The contact currently under your finger is highlighted. This is called a DWIYM (Don't Worry If You Miss) button. Try it!

The contact detail screen

After you have selected your contact, the contact detail screen appears. Depending on the data stored in the contact, different buttons will show up.

Here you can make a phone call, send an SMS, send your GPS position or open the contact in Pocket Outlook. You can exit the contact screen by tapping the "Return" button or clicking the "ok" button in the top left corner. The buttons on the dialog screen are also finger-friendly DWIYM buttons!

Send your position

If you have an integrated GPS in your device, you can send your position to your friend.

FFF will track your position with the GPS and make two Google Maps links. One link is to be opened on a PC, while the other is optimized for opening on a mobile web browser. You can send the position on SMS or email. The buttons here are of course DWIYM buttons as well!

The application menu

On the main screen, there is an application menu.

  • About: Opens the "about" dialog
  • Settings: Opens the settings dialog
  • Manage license: Lets you enter your license key
  • Open Pocket Outlook: Opens the built-in contact manager (but who would do that?!)
  • New contact: Create a new contact

Settings

FFF can be customized in the settings dialog. You can select your keyboard layout, default email account and set FFF as your default contact manager.

There are a few international keyboard layouts included. You can make your own keyboard layouts in the keyboardlayouts/ folder in the FFF application folder on your device. Copy one of the existing .keyboard files using a text editor on your PC or your device.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I purchased a license, but the license code doesn't work!

Please see the ordering page for how to resolve it.

Why can't I send a contact as a vcard or delete a contact?

The FFF philosophy is to provide fast and finger-friendly access to frequently used features. Most people don't delete their contacts very often. To do less frequent operations, open your contact in Pocket Outlook.

Why does FFF connect to the internet when I'm sending my position?

The map link in google maps is very long. A typical example is http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=70.071202,29.753723&spn=0.721809,1.859436&z=9&om=1. Typing this link on your PC is not very user-friendly! Therefore, FFF is connecting to the notlong.com URL shortening service to make a user-friendly short URL. The amount of data transferred is very small (typically 5 kB).

FUTURE VERSIONS

More features are on the todo list, although FFF will never grow into bloatware. Don't expect FFF to ship with an integrated MP3 player!

  • Better support for international character sets, including Unicode for Arabic, Hebrew and more
  • Better mobile map with actual position mark
  • Support for external GPS
  • ...and more
